Various Artists Global Underground 038 Carl Cox – Black Rock Desert Global Underground [UK] 3xCD Release Date: 01 25 10
We’re happy the Global Underground people decided to pick a new DJ to front a compilation and Carl Cox was a wise choice. This pleasantly techy set is captured from a show Carl did at The Opulent Temple in the Black Rock Desert during Burning Man. The idea of that barren landscape complements a mix like this and I’m sure like always, the Limited Edition has an incredibly well photographed booklet to take you there.
Disc One warms up nicely although the Latin elements kill the vibe, I’m sorry to say. Fortunately, that Henry Saiz remix of Guy J’s ‘Lamur’ (which got huge after this mix was recorded) brings this ship back on course. The last 15 minutes of this disc is hot and sweaty with Alan Fitzpatrick’s remix of Joey Beltram and Trevor Rockliffe’s ‘Move!’. The finishing blow, Christian Smith’s ‘Flyertalk’, along with the Guy J track, are both off Bedrock and are easily the strongest tracks on this disc.
I enjoyed the build on Disc Two and the fact that it didn’t peak out right from the get go. There are tracks by Robbie Rivera, Tim Baker, Umek, James Zabiela and Joachim Garraud. The fun part of this disc came with Petrae Foy & PJC Project’s cover version of Underworld’s ‘Long Train’ which was loved, especially when followed by Gui Boratto. That helped finish this comp off nicely. I’m sure the dancefloor was packed on those two cuts. There’s an exciting, positive feeling throughout this set and I think Global Underground returns to the forefront nicely with this release. 7/10 – Eden Alison
