The Pet Shop Boys have recently released their new single ‘Vocal’ (check the video) on MP3/WAV/AIFF and the coveted CD single which has been arriving in everyone’s mailboxes worldwide this past week. There are also a set of exclusive mixes on Defected by Flashmob and a free download of a nicely done radio mix by Jack and Joy on Soundcloud. As if the anthemic original needed any work, now there’s a ton of reinterpretations to suit any DJ who wants to play some of the best work by the most successful British duo (and most successful EDM duo) of all time. You can’t go wrong with this package.
Well, it wouldn’t be Sunday without a little Orb in your stereo so we review the latest single, actually culled from their first album with Lee Scratch Perry, 2012’s The Orbserver In The Star House, which came in a nice limited edition box set with the CD, the instrumentals CD, 3×7″ (two of which are colored), 2 art prints and a business sized card of an oil painting signed and numbered by the Dr. himself (the whole box is limited to 1000 and is individually numbered as well). There are also digital versions, a CD and a 2xLP. WELL…. due to to the popularity of that thing (they may have pressed up some more ‘cuz I see ’em on The Orb’s web shop again), they have used ‘Ball Of Fire’ to promote their appendix to that successful jaunt:
This is called More Tales From The Orbservatory and is also rockin’. ‘Fussball’ (check the vid) and ‘Making Love In Dub’ are the highlights here and with those Mad Professor remixes of ‘Ball Of Fire’, the single (and even the original mix) holds the upsetter just fine. Now get in where you fit in.
Finally, if that weren’t enough, The Orb is set to drop a 4xCD+DVD box set of some of their most incredible feats over the last quarter century. I just read Reggie Youngblood of Black Kids say in this week’s Folio Weekly that The KLF is the template of all their songs. While I’m not exactly sure on that one, Jimmy Cauty was an original member of The Orb and regardless of who influences who, this is possibly the most essential box set release of 2013. It is set to come out October 7th but don’t listen to this pundit, just read the press release and save your duckets.
