Get Hooky on the dance floor!

Ok i must talk about the Peter Hook show at Are Friends Electric the other night. What a fantastic night, ive never seen so many people at square one, and i got to tell you peter hook really rocked some shit. His set went from 90s progressive, to jackin chicago house, to party rock but he always came back to some insane track that everybody wanted to hear, whether it be transmission or born slippy, hands were in the air and pumped all night and you really felt at times that you just might be at the hacienda!!! I pretty much heard every NewOrder/Joy Division remix known to man and quite a few unknown to man. Of course the status of New Order is hard to tell, but if we couldn't see them live here in jax this was truly the next best thing.

So how was the MBM Show you ask???

In the darkness....We all live in the darkness according to Meat Beat Manifesto anyway. But I get ahead of myself one clear night, the doc took a drive down to Orlando because he heard that Meat Beat Manifesto was throwing down at The Social. Having seen there mind blowing show a few years ago in Jax I was excited to check out the new material and see what they added to there visual mayhem. What I didn't realize was that Badawi, the opening act was gonna reign sonic dub destruction down upon all that were there. I did a little reading up on this composer/dub freak, but you really had to be there to witness the bass rumbling in your gut. This wasn't your grandmothers dubstep either, Badawi was droppin' three am pounding dub beats just as hard as any techno dj. With a brief respite we went and checked out the t-shirt booth and the girl running it was dating Mark Pistel (the funky drummer on a lot of MBM tracks). I was tickled pink by the whole encounter but it didn't stop there. When Jack took the stage he out came punching, with the the latest tracks off his new album Autoimmune. This hip-hop dubtastic electronic jam had us all enthralled as we watched Jack Dangers and crew weave a tale of a society taken over by the television, ruled by fear of the president and controlled by the powers that be. For 10+ years MBM has been an experimentalist dub act, influenced by the hip hop sounds of San Francisco there is less anger and more of a stoned realization of what we are doing to the world or what the world is doing to us. Gone are the industrial strength pop tunes replaced the the smell of "marajuna smoke" as the images of self destruction and sampling mayhem ask us to question our reality. Of course he could not help but play a few vocal favorites stating the "consequences" of "past present and future are up to you" all realizing we watch way to much tv.

Got DEMF on the brain???

Check out my DEMF review over at movementmagazine.com also check out my interview witch Jack Dangers in the June/July issue!!!

WMC 2008

Winter Music Conference has been a hedonistic retreat for electronic music lovers for years representing the pulse of what’s happening on a global scale. For some it’s a chance to represent there skills and strike a deal with a label, for others it a chance to submerge into music that the southeast rarely has a chance to enjoy. Whether you’re carrying the handbag for techno or got the need to feed your house addiction the game was on in Miami. We got a treat hearing NYC legend Francois K, while getting down to his evolving sound that has grown for over 20 years, we ran into none other the Danny Teneglia scoping out the joint. Across the hall Tampa native Three brought the minimal madness at the Hallucination party. Reverse Commuter heated things up but Canuck’s Cobblestone Jazz took the prize early on. This Mathew Johnson lead trio caused quite a stir this WMC with their innovative freestyle, on the fly techno, combined with soothing twisted piano chords and tweaked out ethereal vocals. The biggest bang for your buck was the Remix Hotel. The Beat Port sponsored pool party brought a line of WMC’s biggest and brightest stars, from Hawtin to Zabiela you had to stop dancing just long enough to check out the latest in DJ and production madness. We ran into Richard Devine rocking the noise with the Access Atomizer, and Miami’s unsung hero Stryke was rockin out in the Stanton cabana promoting his latest release the Narrowest of Path’s on Plastic City. That night we ran into UK import Sasha cooking up some info for his latest Involver2 cd. Even the Mac store was on point during WMC, Ewan Pearson dropped a genius set to satisfy any craving, we saw him later opening for minimal meets trance guru Gui Boratto at the Kompakt/Resident Advisor party. Unfortunately the Minus party was a no go at 4am, the venue was at capacity but we did make is down to Felt to get with the local Miami techno clan Dirty Gruv. Ray Nicholes from Detroit was there banging the drum. Some how or another we ended up at the Tommy Boy Records party and Bob Sinclair had people letting there hair down with diva’s singing and drummers drumming. Super star techno cohort Adam Beyer was up to the task as he brought his Drumcode label mate Par Grindvik and friends to BED for a late night cocktail that went into high gear. We even managed to stir up some dirt at Ultra Music Festival. For their 10 year anniversary Ultra brought Underworld back for another awestruck phenom performance. They brought 120% with them and even reworked some classic tunes for us old blokes. If you could still move by the end of the week Sunday School for Degenerates at the Pawnshop was the place to be. We heard Steve Bug lay down the law with some amazing minimal – chord tunes and then Ghostly poster boy Matthew Dear got dark and groovy as the sun went down on the Terrace. Once again Miami has proved the longevity of electronic dance music and it’s power to evolve, innovate, inspire and motivate. As we wind down and wish it could last a little longer we spotted a flyer for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, like a pilgrimage to a holy place we are ready to do it again, more techno, more house, more beats over and over again "till the break of dawn". Pure Sasha

We dropped this interview for Movement Magazine check it: We caught up with Sasha this WMC during the Global Underground Involver2 party and asked him a few quick one's about the new album. How is Involver2 going to be different from the last outing? This album is going to be a pure electronic album. The drums are pure 808s and 909s. It gets a four on the floor really quickly and stays there. The last album started off with a shimmery guitar record and went off into spanish guitars and ended up with Ulrich Schnauss at 140bpm. This record is much more leading and much more pure but really uplifting. You could say it's more minimal but it is not a minimal record. Are you working with anyone new on this album. We've got Home Video, Apparat, Teflon Tel Aviv, M83, the track list is sick. How do you keep up with the change in sounds and managing to stay fresh? Well basically as a dj you play the best records that you have got at your disposal...and play what excites you the most and keeping playing and try to make best each set. What about as a producer are your techniques changing? All the time. I went out and bought about $2000 worth of guitar pedals and ever single sound I've got has been processed with a guitar pedal...To go through those is so much more statisfying then opening up a plugin and spending 5 hours with it. You have also been releasing tracks under your new label Emfire what been the driving force behind that? We have a lot of tracks that we finished we were thinking what should we do with these. Ten years ago we would have signed a record deal but there are no record labels anymore that want to sign deals so I figured why not just do my own. I don't have an office its just downloads and a digital ep and it has a whole new track and feel to the releases of the track. Look for Involver2 release later this year. Sasha and Digweed are currently touring the US and playing at the Coachella Festival. Sasha and Digweed Tour Dates 04-02 - Boston, MA - The Estate 04-03 - Philadelphia, PA - The Fillmore At TLA 04-04 - New York, NY - Webster Hall 04-05 - Washington, DC - Ibiza Nightclub 04-07 - Nashville, TN - City Hall 04-09 - Columbus, OH - Karma 04-10 - Detroit, MI - Clutch Cargos 04-11 - Toronto, ONT - Kool Haus 04-12 - Chicago, IL - House of Blues 04-14 - St. Louis, MO - Dantes 04-15 - Minneapolis, MN - Epic 04-17 - Guadalajara, MEXICO - Foro Alterno 04-18 - Monterrey, MEXICO - Autocinema 04-19 - Mexico City, MEXICO - Arena Mexico 04-22 - Seattle, WA - Showbox Sodo 04-23 - Vancouver, BC - Plush Nightclub 04-24 - Portland, OR - Roseland Theater 04-25 - San Francisco, CA - The Warfield 04-26 - Coachella, CA - Coachella Festival
