Kompakt return with their annual comp series and you should damn well own at least one of these by now. A thorough absorbing of this comp reveals it’s unevenness. Disc 1 has some seriously uninspired moments. Opener ‘Der Wallach’ by DJ Koze is emptiness personified. The remix of Matias Aguayo’s ‘Rollerskate’ is great if you like to play pattycake with Beardman 2008 at TSI on a dead Sunday night. Unfortunately, it is one bettered (or worsened) by Superpitcher’s embarrassing ‘Lapdance’. Did everyone just turn in their worst crap? The Field’s ‘Caroline’ is probably the best cut here, referencing 70s prog rock while the humorless ‘Robert Schumann/Clara Wieck’ by Wolfgang Voigt offers the only other somewhat-memorable entry here. 

Disc Two comes back like a three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth. Thomas Fehlmann kicks it off and each subsequent track is one bomb after the other. Fehlmann really is the water that cures the dry heave of Disc One. Gui Boratto’s team-up with Iggor Cavalera screams triumph over adversity. Robag Wruhme, Michael Mayer and Walls all turn in strong efforts. The Popnoname track ‘Hello Gorgeous’ is the kind of lyric-centric EDM the rock-oriented hipster club scene should be dancing to. Coma and Gus Gus also come correct. This disc really saved the comp and Kompakt fans will rejoice. 7/10
