Sounds Abound

reality testing

I reckon this is the hottest shit going this week and why not? Lone back on top with another full length for R&S who have apparently stopped throwing in a free CD with the double LP (this time in clear yellow wax). When I bought the last full-length, it hit me that R&S cuts their albums quite low in comparison to the 12″s and I ended up using that free CD a whole lot more. Fast forward to last week when I ordered the Japanese CD version of ‘Reality Testing’ (with the two bonus tracks) and we have a winner: Matt Cutler takes us on another incomparable journey (‘Airglow Fires’ always gets a big response at ArtWalk) and perfectly splits the difference between hip-hop and house best shown in his new video for ‘Aurora Northern Quarter’. I don’t know if it’s the beat or those heavy-duty piano stabs but there’s a smile on my face. Lone also heads up this week’s mix for Resident Advisor so really, you can’t lose.

devotion

New signing Nico Lahs has the latest release on Sasha’s still-going-strong Last Night On Earth imprint. The 12″ was released a week prior to the download and both are now available. ‘Devotion’ and ‘Eruption’ are tight chuggers with serious snares. The remix of ‘Devotion’ is a balls-out 130 BPM floor-wiper and having listened to this thing all the way through I’m pretty sure he rocked one of these at Firestone while some of our locals were falling asleep in VIP…

boomers

Billy Dalessandro drops a brand new full-length called ‘Boomers’ on digital platforms and a very limited picture-disc 12″ collecting four of the choicest cuts. This album is based on Billy’s travels throughout some of the world’s most desolate places: deserts – and while his brand of brooding techno for Harthouse, Resopal Schallware and Soniculture has always been a bit aloof, this takes it a step further with an almost outer-space-like quality. Sparse, yet rich.

live in miami

I always wondered how Digweed signs all those damn slipcases. They come flat, of course! Ok, you already know about this one but good God, treat yourself to one of the most awesome mix-CDs of 2014. The 3xCD is also available as a 5xLP set or get them both, they won’t leave your box until Christmas at least! From Laurent Garnier to Hot Since ’82 all the after-midnight bases are covered here. This is taken from the last night at the Vagabond during WMC2014 but you can read all about that on some other blog.

Tomorrow we’re kickin’ off our interview series with Jacksonville’s kindest promoter, Byron Brown and as always, some more choons.
