Booka Shade are back today with their fourth album, ‘More!’. It’s an 11 track, 45 minute ride along the boundaries of house and techno but with a real attention to craftsmanship. I don’t count myself as a big Booka Shade fan but what impressed the shit out of me was that every track seemed better than the last. I started on the ground floor and ended up in the penthouse.
I was not initially taken by opener ‘Havanna Sex Dwarf’ (it was a little too deliberate) and some of the earlier passages in this album were a bit dry. However, I later realized their importance in the overall scope of ‘More!’. The music gets more fluid by the cut so ‘Teenage Spaceman’ falls into the great wide open of ‘Divine’ with Yello frontman Dieter Meier. ‘Scaramanga’ recalls The Field in the best possible way while staying original and every track is now one bomb after the other. New single ‘Bad Love’ is club ready as is and the crescendo is the sonic juiciness of ‘This Is Not The Time’.
Booka Shade will be playing the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit May 31st which is at the end of a six-date US tour which covering the hipster mecca that is Williamsburg and a few west coast cities. Take a minute to check this release because the ‘Shade’s really hitting their stride on this one.
